SOVEREIGN

SA’s Domestic Rand-Denominated Al-Ijarah Sukuk (2023)

The first successfully issued sovereign Rand-denominated Al-Ijarah (lease-based) Sukuk on the African continent, executed through The RSA Domestic Sukuk Trustee (RF) Proprietary Limited as trustee of The RSA Domestic Sukuk Trust. Standard Bank, in partnership with AFRIS Capital, served as Joint Lead Managers alongside Bahrain Conventional Wholesale Bank — a landmark issuance for Islamic finance in South Africa and across the broader African market.

WATER

Ikusasa Chemicals (2023)

AFRIS’s investment in Ikusasa Chemicals strengthens its position in the water infrastructure sector. Ikusasa is a key supplier of water treatment chemicals to organisations including Sasol, NECSA, Umgeni Water, and the City of Cape Town, and designs, builds, and operates packaged water treatment plants — backed by South Africa’s first membrane manufacturing facility

INDUSTRIAL

Enaex Africa (2021)

Through our explosives’ investment holding associate company Africa Rising Explosives, AFRIS has partnered with Sasol South Africa and Enaex S.A., a Chilean-based multinational conglomerate. The partnership saw Afris acquire a significant minority stake in Enaex Africa (Pty) Ltd and thus establish a third partnership with a foreign direct investor into South Africa.

ENERGY

Eskom Global Medium Term Note (2018)

Eskom successfully priced a 10-year, dual-tranche global bond valued at US$1.5 billion under its US$4 billion Global Medium-Term Note Programme. The issuance was led by a consortium of joint mandated lead managers — Standard Bank, partnering with AFRIS Capital, Absa, Barclays, and JP Morgan, together with Quartile Capital and Dew Partners. Proceeds funded the completion of Eskom’s capital expansion programme.

MINERAL RESOURCES

Kudumane Manganese Resources (2013)

Kudumane Manganese Resources (KMR) is a major South African manganese mine-to-market mining company. This marked our second partnership with foreign direct investor into South Africa.

SOCIAL IMPACT

(2026)

In pursuit of the United Nations SDGs 6, 4, 7 and 17, our empowerment vehicles (the Karen Gantsho Foundation and the AFRIS Community Empowerment Company) leveraged solar technology to replace diesel energy, and partnered with local communities to facilitate water access to four villages in Emalahleni Local Municipality, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.
